BlackBoard

I will be teaching a course this summer on how to use Logos software (the greatest Bible software on the planet IMHO) and will be conducting some of the class online. I am thinking of using a platform called “BlackBoard” and would like to know if anyone out there has any experience with this or other educational platforms. If you wouldn’t mind responding here, rather than by personal note it would help keep the discussion public.
I plan to put up syllabus, grades, assignments, web-pages to be looked at, and other web based work, as well as insisting that students interact with one another online as well as in class. Whatever help you can offer will be much appreciated.
Thanks Much

Hi Dr Sam,
Below is a website that I suggest you look at before making a decision on using blackboard. http://moodle.org/
Sloan Consortium, which is the nations premier distance learning resource, utilizes Moodle in lieu of blackboard mainly because its free open source software. Also, if you want to email, I have other resources that might benefit you specifically.
Thanks

I completed a BS in Psychology: Family Studies @ Western Baptist College in Oregon (currently called Corban College). Class discussions were conducted using BlackBoard. The instructer posted questions/statements pertaining to the class material. Each student was then required to respond to the instructer’s questions/statements. The student was additionally requested to comment/respond to one of the posts made by another student. In my opinion, the process created a great learning environment. The instructor would steer the students in a certain direction and the discussions that followed (everyone ended up posting much more than the required minimum; often quoting the resources they used in arriving at their opinion/assertions) were really thought provoking; often invoking a desire to pursue further study/inquiry. The system was very user friendly; making it easier to conduct the type of exchange described above.

As an undergrad student I had professors who made use of Blackboard and I always found it to be very easy and beneficial. I am not familiar with any of its competitors - there may be better programs out there - but my limited experience with BlackBoard was a positive one.

Dr. Sam,
Some of my classes at FSU utilized Blackboard, and I always found it to be convenient and user-friendly. I appreciated having all of the information, documents, and applications for a particular course in one place (that is, one-stop shopping). Although we didn’t use the discussion forums very much for the classes I took, I know of other classes that did utilize those features and my friends in those classes believed they were helpful in stimulating discussion and interaction among the students. I would be in favor of using it at Knox if the cost is not a problem.
